Departmental Overview
Master's in Real Estate Development + Design (MRED + D) program overview
The world's population is rapidly urbanizing. Demand for real estate professionals who have expertise in both traditional aspects of urban real estate as well as design, is increasing, particularly given challenges such as sea level rise, climate change, shortages of affordable housing, and the need for transit-oriented development. For these reasons, the Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Real Estate (IGCRE) was established recently. The program now serves 45 certificate students who are enrolled in a variety of UC Berkeley graduate professional degrees. Building on the demand for this certificate program, CED has created a stand-alone Master's in Real Estate Development + Design (MRED+D) degree. This new degree will attract students from within the U.S. and from other countries. The program is primarily designed for students who are between 5-10 years into their careers, and contemplating a major promotional opportunity. The program will provide these individuals with the tools and expertise to specialize in this rapidly evolving field. In the first year of the program, enrollment will be approximately 15 students. Academic Leadership: Leads curriculum planning, and implementation with consultation from Faculty Director and Director of Practice; serves as lead strategist for Faculty Director. Collaborates with campus-wide departments, managers, and internal constituencies to ensure interdepartmental collaboration on academic issues and courses; recommends petition exceptions that affect the requirements of multiple departments. Identifies and refers to GSAO for resolution intricate student issues/grievances, complex grade dispute issues, and other students' academic issues/problems. Oversees strategic direction of program ? articulates vision and objectives. Ensures investment in program activities are aligned with vision and objectives. Directs long-term planning and develops policies and procedures.
Accountable to CED's ladder-rank faculty committee and the Dean of the College, the Executive Director formulates program strategies and goals, directs long-term planning, and develops policies and procedures for ensuring quality program delivery to students. Requests exceptions to campus or unit policies or procedures, based on strategic need.
Coordinates varied and competing requirements associated with ensuring that the MRED+D is executed as a highly innovative program while negotiating the constraints imposed by its operation on the Berkeley campus.
Identifies new initiatives and implementation plans to foster continued growth of the program size and reputation.
MRED+D Policies: Advises Faculty Director on the formulation of program policies; analyzes the consequences of program's academic policies and recommends new or changed policies; recommends solutions to program's problems. Assesses program's effectiveness, and recommends changes to program's content, policies and procedures accordingly. Serves on committees representing the program, participating in short term and long term planning. Participates in professional organizations that provide leadership and skill building in MRED+D professional degree programs nationwide and globally.
Advises MRED+D program leadership and develops outreach and marketing strategies, including identifying targeted institutions and prospective applicant networks to meet program's goals.
Manages the overall core work processes and metrics of the program to ensure quality delivery at every step. Core work processes include: candidate marketing and outreach (U.S. and international), applicant processing and admissions, on-campus student support and advising, industry field project acquisition and delivery, career counseling/post graduation reference assistance and alumni relations.
Establish and monitor key operational metrics (e.g. number admissions applications, percent admits who accept, career placements, etc.)
Continuously seek way to standardize and automate core work processes to ensure consistency and operational efficiency and cost control
Identify and cultivate prospective new industrial partnerships; oversee ongoing collaboration between industry and internal campus resources to deliver quality learning outcomes in student field projects
Establish career counseling services and industry networks tailored to industries of interest to MRED+D graduates
Develop, implement and adhere to policies regarding intellectual property in addition to negotiating and managing IP agreements (e.g. NDAs) and contracts of highly significant impact.
Manage and grow high-profile industry partnerships which are critical to the long-run success of the MPA:
Working with Faculty Director and Director of Practice, support student study-travel and competitions, and negotiate student team capstone projects with industry executives. Industry hosts include private real estate firms of many types, non-governmental organizations, non-profits, educational institutions, city and local and state government offices, with different organizational partners each academic year.
Working closely with industry and other partners and College placement coordinators, oversee robust opportunities for job placement for MRED+D participants by creating multiple opportunities for student/industry relations, including on-campus career presentations and classroom discussions by placement executives in appropriate partner organizations. Target goal is that approximately 90% of the program's graduates will have found jobs within 6 months of graduation.
Utilizing an in-depth knowledge of the field, oversees staff who counsel students on post-degree employment opportunities and practices.
Financial Aid, Human Resources and Budgeting:
Resolves extremely sensitive, specialized, and/or complex financial aid issues; and administers MRED+D fellowship funds. Oversees management of available funds for entering students. Leads program budgeting and accounting processes to support the financial infrastructure of the MRED+D program. Provides financial oversight and management of key program areas. Identifies and pursues funding opportunities and revenue streams.
Recommends and implements decisions on issues (operational and budget processes, admissions, staff FTE, finance, human resources and space planning) that have program-wide impact. Advise faculty on matters concerning several strategic and/or functional areas and constituencies.
Manages HR resources; supervises student, contract and/or career staff.
Manages financial and HR resources.
Required Qualifications
Demonstrated experience developing academic programs on new topics
Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
Demonstrated ability to work in both a leadership role and in an implementation role as part of a high-functioning team, exhibiting political acumen and strong interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated experience in self-supporting revenue-producing operations.
Extensive management and research administration experience at a major research institution, preferably at the UC system-wide level (i.e., UCOP)
Leadership experience in academic, private sector, nonprofit, and/or government agencies.
Academic background and/professional experience in selected area of research.
Demonstrated organizational skills sufficient to prioritize, form strategic plans, and build a program from inception to operation.
Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices, e.g. in business contract and hiring negotiations; and e.g. applying and interpreting a broad range of university policies and procedures
Advanced ability to effectively interact with diverse groups and a broad community of faculty, researchers, scientists, industrial partners, program/center managers, staff, students, and funding agencies.
Advanced oral and written communication skills; demonstrated experience and ability to communicate effectively, including empathetic listening, presentations and public speaking..
Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills. Professional demeanor, attention to detail, ability to act decisively.
Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results; demonstrated commitment to diversity and experience working with individuals from different cultural, ethnic, geographic, and experiential backgrounds.
Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers, and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management.
Highly skilled fundraising experience.
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
MRED or MBA with Real Estate Concentration, MCP, or other related graduate degree or equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Past experience creating and launching new graduate degree program(s).
Advanced knowledge of and/or experience with academic counseling and advising.
Experience with UC student systems, such as Scheduling, CARS, SIS, transcript review, etc.
Language(s) in addition to English.
Salary & Benefits

The salary range designated for this position: $86,600 - $132,000; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
