Departmental Overview
The Haas School Business ("Berkeley Haas") is one of the pre-eminent business schools in the world. The school employs 80 FTE ladder faculty, 130 professional faculty and 230 FTE staff serving 2,200 students in six degree programs ? three of which are "self-supporting." In addition, the school is home to a strong and growing Executive Education unit which serves both domestic and international executives. BerkeleyHaas supports a multitude of research, teaching and public service institutes as well as two research laboratories, the Long Business Library, and an on-site caf?. Staff is organized across many functions including admissions, career services, computing, financial aid, student affairs, payroll, business services and facilities. The school provides business and financial leadership/expertise to the campus and is served by an international advisory board of business and industry leaders.
The school's annual budget is in excess of $150 million and boasts an endowment of more than $300 million. The complexities of the school's finances include non-state funded faculty FTE, self-funded degree programs (and corresponding independent fee approval and registration processes), over 300 funds of all types (central, student fees, recharge, gifts, endowments (held at both the Regents and Berkeley Foundation) contracts and grants), and multiple loan programs some of which are self-funded and insured. Further, the Berkeley Haas senior staff, Dean, faculty and advisory board demand robust year-end financial statements. In short, the school has the highest standards for financial management AND it has an incredibly complex professional school financial system given the unique activities of the school.
Responsibilities
The Database and Enrollment Specialist in the Financial Aid unit provides support to the Haas Financial Aid Office. The position manages and coordinates the flow of data between various applications and databases designed to package and provide financial aid information to students; creates specialized reporting structures for various units and campus departments and coordinates the receipt and transfer of electronic data from various sources. Applies professional data management concepts and defined IT and data management policies and procedures in completing assignments.
Involves planning, designing, developing, implementing and administering databases to acquire, store and retrieve data; ensures accuracy and completeness; establishes and maintains data security; migrates data to new systems; optimizes/tunes data system performance; develops database dictionaries, specifications, tables and data elements. Usually not an application developer.
Involves analytical studies on a variety of policies, projects, programs and issues in support of a function, program and/or organizational unit, or in research of new or changing systems and programs. Assists in policy and program planning, development and administration; interprets, monitors and analyzes information regarding policies and procedures and provides consultative services regarding general management to department administrators.
Responsible for data management and analysis of Berkeley Haas' financial aid programs.
Responsible for all facets of financial aid data management, including financial aid reporting and application systems on all Berkeley Haas financial aid programs.
Partners with Director in Financial Aid and Information Technology departments to assess and improve existing data management, reporting and business processes. Including implementation of new systems
Supports data management and communication plans to financial aid recipients
Supports Director and CFO in data reporting and analysis.
Manages multiple in-house databases including, Grants, Scholarships databases, Financial Aid databases used year-round, and task-oriented databases such as Slate; maintains and ensures secure data storage and integrity of data relationships.
Working with Berkeley Haas IT unit, develops and manages recovery systems for all data to a point of known consistency in case of system failure
Conducts intra-office data retrieval, collection, modification, and output
Develops & builds customized reporting structures for Financial Aid Office needs
Combines and organizes data from external sources into in-house databases to assist with internal processes
Creates reports from Grant/Scholarship/Loan data in various formats as requested
Downloads, installs, and troubleshoots access to external databases for Financial Aid staff
Produces management reports and analysis of financial aid programs for senior management and financial aid staff, including Dean, CFO, and Director of Admissions
Produces ad-hoc analysis, forecasts and reports for senior management on key financial aid trends, such as average student loan debt, loan repayment expense projections as well as yield and other data.
Develops & builds customized reporting structures for Financial Aid Office needs
Develops, implements, and administers datasets using multiple data tables and criteria for generating reports and tracking information from multiple sources
Builds additional database components as necessary; works with a variety of database components for addressing emerging and ongoing needs
Conducts data analysis for annual cost modeling and ABA survey, and statistical research in response to internal/external requests; coordinates data-input and calculations for grants
Applies professional concepts to perform analysis of data and systems pertaining to moderately complex projects, policies and/or processes and functions.
Provides a variety of analytical duties in support of a function, program and/or organizational unit
Assists with implementation of financial aid business processes
Developing query to identify population of students for communication messages.
Supporting data processes for institutional aid packaging programs.
Required Qualifications
Requires knowledge of data management systems, practices and standards. Must have advanced SQL experience and advanced experience in Microsoft Excel and Access.
Must have knowledge relating to logical data design, data warehouse design, data integration or the management of web content or other unstructured data.
Must have working knowledge of statistical and financial concepts
Must be able to prepare simple data models under guidance of more senior professionals.
Working knowledge of common campus-specific and other computer application programs.
Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing.
Solid ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
Customer service orientation.
Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
Must be familiar with important types of data models, such as logical/relational models, dimensional models and document models.
Good interviewing and listening skills.
Strong analytical and design skills, including the ability to abstract information requirements from real-world processes to understand information flows in computer systems.
Critical thinking skills and attention to detail.
Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with a diverse population.
Ability to work independently as well as a critical member of the Financial Aid team.
Ability to successfully complete a conviction history check.
Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
Salary & Benefits
Hiring range is $45,300 to $69,100, depending on experience

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
