Departmental Overview
The College of Engineering at UC Berkeley is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top three Engineering colleges in the United States. With more than 220 regular faculty members, 1, 600 graduate students and 2,700 undergraduate students located in seven academic departments, Engineering is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus. Operating expenditures for the College as a whole are close to $210 million annually.
EECS is the largest Department on the UC campus consisting of over 130 faculty, adjunct, active emeriti and PIR appointments, 1,000 undergraduates both in the College of Engineering and Letters and Science, 550 graduate students, and 65 staff members.
The incumbent will work for the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences to provide electrical and technical services to the EECS facilities for the Department's instructional laboratories, research projects, and minor renovations.
These services include surveying existing electrical infrastructure in the EECS facilities, installing electrical services for novel laboratory equipment and instruments; coordination of work with supervisor, testing, modifying, documenting and maintenance of electrical or electronic equipment.
Responsibilities
50% Incumbent assignments include installation of electrical services and card key system to support facilities. Incumbent required will update panel schedules and label devices in field. Incumbent is also responsible for contacting & coordination of inspection of his work by the Berkeley Campus Inspection Office.
20% Incumbent is responsible for all aspects of repair and maintenance of electronic equipment in instructional and research laboratories. This includes wiring, wire-wrapping, soldering, testing, installation of connectors of CAT5-E cabling, audio visual cabling, for building and repairing. Installation of cable or wire to connect various equipment and computers from labs to machine rooms. Document power and emergency power support for computer machine equipment for various computer machine rooms.
10% Incumbent is responsible for planning the installation of electrical projects for research and instruction from design through implementation. Verify existing utility conditions to insure compatibility of design intent. Insure project schedule does not interfere with instructional schedules. This includes installation of new fire alarm devices in existing fire alarm system with the approval of Campus Fire Marshal and in coordination with Campus Fire Alarm Technicians. Electrician is to coordinate all activities associated with the projects with his supervisor and the client.
10% Maintain Electrician license with the State of California. Incumbent's work to comply with mandated Berkeley Campus and State code compliances. Workmanship to be performed in a safe manner. Maintain and developed a comprehensive understanding of existing power systems in the lab facilities to maintain operations. Use this knowledge to install or repair electrical systems to support existing and new lab facilities in Cory and Soda Hall.
10% Keep records of time and scheduling of repairs, estimation of cost and assignment of tasks. Incumbent is responsible to know priorities and due dates of projects. Position is required to maintain organized electrical storage (parts area) and work area.
Required Qualifications
Estimating skills of electrical, low voltage parts and materials and labor to install.
Journeyman level Electrician with 5 years experience.
Low voltage cable connection experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Institutional knowledge of UC Berkeley Facilities.
Fire alarm control wiring experience and alarm programming.
Electricians License.

The hourly salary designated for this position: $40.01; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
